On learning how to write poetry

Wear your emotions like you wear your skin.

Breathe their air and be heavy with their weight.

Let their voice fill your lungs; their blood ink your page.

If you write about sorrow, let your words weep.

If you write about grief, let your words break.

If you write about love, let your words leap.

If you write about joy, let your words soar.

If you write about anger, let your words roar.

And if you write about loss,

then write as if you don’t know what to write anymore.
